Chapel - Managing Sound
Using the Chapel requires a 2-hour training session with Regent IT. Email [email protected] to book a session. Using the Chapel without proper training is not allowed.
Turn on the Studio Live
Turn on the monitor on the left computer on the sound desk
Launch the application Universal Control from the bottom taskbar
Click Settings from the top menu of the application and select Rescan Network
Select the bottom StudioLive 24R with the wifi symbol on the left side of the panel
Select and Turn on Microphones
Please note that this page contains instructions as a reference for the microphones and set up needed for lectures.
Running sounds for instrumental performances requires further training.
Lectures may use 4 different types of microphones:
The Podium microphone
Wireless handheld microphones
Wired microphones
A wireless lapel microphone
Wireless microphones can be found in the closet behind the AV desk. Rechargeable batteries can be found in the chargers in the back corner of the closet.
Please always use freshly charged batteries for wireless microphones and be careful to replace them in the charger when the event is done
To replace the batteries on Wireless handheld microphones, unscrew the bottom portion of the handle and insert batteries
To replace the batteries on the Wireless lapel microphone, slide the front panel down and insert batteries.
The wireless handheld microphones have a button at the bottom of the handle which controls power. The lapel microphone has a button on top of the pack.
To turn a wireless microphone on long-press the button until the light turns green
To manually mute a microphone, single-press the button and the light will light turn red
Please note that the manual mute is not controlled by the sound board. If the microphone is manually muted, it must be manually unmuted and unmuted on the board in order to be heard
To turn off a wireless microphone off, long-press the button again until the light turns off
Lectures may also employ a monitor so that the lecturer can hear questions from participants
Wireless microphones in the AV room
Batteries for wireless microphones (around the corner)
Click Lecture on the bottom right and unmute the desired microphones (HH = handheld, LP = lapel). Unmute the Podium mic.
Running Sound
Ask the lecturer to arrive at least 15 minutes before start
Do a sound check. Ask them to read something for a few minutes. An appropriate volume is when the lecturer sounds like they are right in front of you. If the volume is too low you can turn it up slowly. If it is still too quiet, you can ask them to speak up, stand closer to the microphone, or you can reposition the lapel mic closer to their mouth, or you can give them a handheld mic. They must hold it directly in front of their mouths like an icecream cone.
Q & A should use the handheld microphones. However it is difficult to hear questions from the front, so use a stage monitor with "LecturerMon". Click on "LecturerMon" on the right and verify the volume send for the two handheld microphones on the left. [See image below].
Do not put any of the lecturer themselves into the monitor, as it will contribute to feedback.
Podium Microphone
The podium microphone is the easiest way to lecture in the Chapel. Just unmute it and have the lecturer stay behind the podium.
Do not position the podium microphone close to the mouth. It is designed to work best one or two feet away.
The podium mic is very directional - the lecturer should stand directly in front of it, not to either side.
If the podium mic is plugged in and unmuted but you can't hear anything, verify phantom power has been turned on.
Lapel Microphone
Turn on the lapel mic, verify that it is working by unmuting the channel on the sound board. Check that it is working. Then press the mute button on the microphone itself (the light will be red). Leave the channel on the board unmuted.
Give the lecturer the lapel mic and position the clip as close to their mouth as possible. If they are wearing anything that might touch the microphone (earings, etc) they should take them off, or use the handheld microphone.
Show them how to unmute the microphone (single-press, light turns green).
Ask them to please not wrap the lapel mic cord after they are done. Simply take it off and place it on the podium. Wrapping the cord will break the microphone.
Ask them to lecture from the front and not to walk up the stairs. The lapel microphones are too sensitive to use anywhere but the front.
During the lecture you should mute the lecturer from the sound board if they leave the room, or do not intend to be heard. Do not just turn down the volume.
Front-Fill Speakers
Verify that the speakers and the power bar is turned on.
Verify the FrontFill send is unmuted.
During sound check verify that you have an appropriate sound level for the first three rows. Increase/decrease using the FrontFill (Aux 3) send.
Side-Fill Speakers
The side-fill speakers should be on at all times.
Verify the SideLeft (Aux 5) and SideRight (Aux 6) send is unmuted.
During sound check verify sound level for the sides. Increase/decrease via the SideFill send.
Troubleshooting Sound
If aren't getting any sound verify:
Microphone is on and unmuted (green light)
Channel is unmuted and mains are unmuted (farthest right "mute" button)
Channel volume and mains are up (farthest right volume)
Channel is part of the main group [See image below]
If the sound board stops showing audio as vertical green bars in the channels you should close all Universal Control windows, relaunch, rescan network, and connect. You can do this in the middle of a lecture without affecting sound.
If the sound board stops working (muting/unmuting channels does nothing) restart it following the steps from #1 above.
If you get feedback mute the channel immediately. Turn it way down and unmute. If it is a continued problem switch the lecturer to a handheld microphone.
If the sound board can't be connected after rescanning network you will need to reboot the mixer in the front AV room.
Playing Sound and Video
Audio and video can be played by following the same instructions to connect and display a Powerpoint as documented on the Chapel Projector page
The channels that control these levels are the Line In (Channels 21-22), Airplay/Project (Channels 23-24), and StudioLive Computer (Digital Return) channels, which can all be quickly accessed from the Lecture channel grouping on the SoundBoard
Audio can be played from the audio computer by unmuting the Digital Return channel and verifying that the computer audio is set to StudioLive 24R and is not muted [See image below]
Recording Sound
Before launching verify that the computer is not playing anything (example YouTube). It will feed back on the recording.
Launch "Capture" software. It is the grey icon on the taskbar next to the Universal Control blue icon.
Click "Start a Session"
Enter a name for the session
On the Capture application, the channels from the Soundboard will display on the left-hand column
Remove all channels with the topmost red button on the left
Add the desired channels by clicking their red buttons
You can now resume playing audio on the computer if needed
Start the recording
To end, click the unlock button, then stop.
Recordings are available upon request from [email protected]
